Water Mill in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

The Rural Health Association of Tennessee (RHAT) held their annual conference on November 18-20, 2015, in Pigeon Forge.

The 3-day program, “Change. Challenge. Opportunity. Learning from the Past. Planning for the Future,” featured pre-conference workshops along with several breakout sessions on topics related to rural health care in Tennessee.

The opening keynote speaker, Eric Clauss, MSN, RN, EMT-P, spoke about stress. His presentation, “Stressed: It Changed Everything,” chronicled his own life challenges with suicidal thoughts and depression due to his work in the emergency medicine field. He now travels the country speaking to health professionals about the power of a balanced life, spirituality, attitude, choices and consequences when dealing with stressful health situations in daily work life.

School-based Telehealth was a hot topic of discussion at the South Central Telehealth Resource Center exhibitor table. While several districts in Tennessee are interested in implementing this type of healthcare system, the Polk County School District has partnered with several healthcare and community-based organizations to implement a program. President, Bill Jolly, stated, “RHAT is dedicated to redefining rural health care and maintaining a medical presence in those communities that are most vulnerable.”
