JAMA Publishes UAMS Study of Digital Health Visits for Prenatal Care Before, During and After COVID-19 Pandemic

A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) study has found that COVID-19 sparked a big jump in the use of digital health services for prenatal care that remained higher than pre-pandemic levels through late 2021.

Published in JAMA Network Open, the study using a national database showed that telehealth use during a 40-week pregnancy went from 1.1% for deliveries in January 2020 to 17.3% for deliveries in November 2020, before declining to 9.9% by October 2021.

The National Institutes of Health Pathways to PRevention (P2P) Program announces a “recently published Notice of Special Interest (NOSI)* highlighting potential funding for research on the real-world effectiveness of provider-to-provider telehealth in rural communities:

NOT-HL-23-083—Assessing Real-World Effectiveness and Implementation of Telehealth-Guided Provider-to-Provider Communication among Rural Communities
First available application due date: October 5, 2023

Research supported by this NOSI is expected to:

Contribute to the advancement of health equity and access to care in rural communities through implementation research focused on telehealth-guided provider-to-provider communication
Stimulate evidence-based interventional and observational research to investigate the real-world effectiveness of provider-to-provider telehealth in managing the health of rural populations while observing, gathering, and assessing information on implementation
Develop and test implementation strategies while observing and gathering information on the intervention’s impact on relevant outcomes in settings where evidence of clinical effectiveness of provider-to-provider telehealth is robust”
