The SCTRC has just been refunded to continue providing our excellent telehealth educational materials, resources, and hands-on training!

As a part of the HRSA Telehealth Resource Center Program, that supports regional and national telehealth resource centers, the South Central Telehealth Resource Center has received a $1.3 million, four-year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to implement and expand digital health services.

The grant will award $325,000 in funding each year through 2029 and will support our ongoing efforts to develop, maintain and expand digital health services and training for health care providers across Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee.

We’re honored to continue serving our region and look forward to the innovation and collaboration this next phase will bring.”

The South Central Telehealth Resource Center provides technical assistance, workforce training and evidence-based resources to equip health care organizations, providers and stakeholders with the knowledge and tools they need to implement and expand digital health services. Support is primarily offered on-demand through the center’s website, LearnTelehealth.org, and through individualized assistance. We also creates patient-focused materials to facilitate digital health consults, remote patient monitoring and in-home device use to ensure accessibility and engagement in virtual care. Among our resources are virtual visit billing and reimbursement guides, regional policy updates, educational modules, webinars, and so much more!

The SCTRC has been continuously funded by the HRSA Office for Advancement of Telehealth since 2010 and is one of 12 centers in the HRSA-backed National Consortium of Telehealth Resource Centers. We works collaboratively with other centers, along with UAMS, HRSA and other national and regional partners, and maintains five satellite training centers in Arkansas and Tennessee.

Through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), and in conjunction with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Arkansas Legislature, and the Arkansas Governor’s office, the Department of Human Services was approved to distribute approximately $20 million through grants for the purpose of building infrastructure essential to Medicaid programs and the continuum of care. These grants are open to Medicaid providers or providers who can attest they will enroll in Medicaid if a grant is awarded. The construction funded through these grants will house core services that offer treatment in community-based settings throughout Arkansas.

USDA Rural Development Under Secretary, Dr. Basil Gooden, announced the opening of applications for grants to aid people in rural and Tribal communities gain access to remote education and health care.

The US Department of Agriculture is making approximately $60 million in funding available under the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Grant Program. This program funds distance learning and telemedicine services, like audio and video equipment, to digitally connect people to education, training and health care resources that are limited or unavailable in remote parts of the country.

Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) Evidence Based Telehealth Network Program (EB-TNP)

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) released a new Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to integrate behavioral health services into primary care settings using telehealth technology. HRSA will award approximately $8.75 million to up to 25 grantees over a period of five years.

Who is eligible?
Eligible applicants shall be domestic public or private, non-profit, or for-profit entities that demonstrate they will provide services through a telehealth network. This includes faith-based, tribal, and community-based organizations. Please view the funding opportunity on grants.gov for complete eligibility information.

When are applications due?
The application is due March 22, 2024.

Presented by Dr. Kristi Henderson, DNP, Director of Telehealth at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Dr. Henderson’s talk is titled, “Telehealth Reimbursement: Mississippi’s Journey to Private and Public Insurance Reimbursement.” 

Henderson and other leaders at UMMC were instrumental in getting telehealth legislation passed earlier this Spring. Hear how Henderson was able to pass progressive legislation in the deep south. That’s no knock on Mississippi, believe me. The other two states in our south central region, Arkansas and Tennessee, have not been able to achieve legislation to this magnitude.

The National Telehealth Webinar Series presented by the National Network of Telehealth Resource Centers. This month presented by Barry W. Heath, MD from the University of Vermont. Dr. Heath’s talk is titled, “Pediatric Critical Care Telemedicine.”

Dr. Heath serves as the Chief of the Division of Inpatient and Critical Care Pediatrics, Fletcher Allen Health Care/University of VT College of Medicine. This webinar should be particularly interesting to those involved in rural emergency medicine and pediatrics.

Ask yourself: Do I have a clearly defined programmatic idea that addresses a dire need in my region, aligns all the necessary partners and expertise, and recognizes what is needed to bring the program to life, while also sustaining its life? If so, you’re ready to pursue grants and contracts.

Federal grants are perhaps easiest to find, as Grants.gov allows you to search open opportunities or subscribe to daily alerts chronicling federal funding opportunities as they are announced.

• search beyond “telehealth” or related keywords.
• look for non-traditional opportunities
• think outside of the box

Reading announcements for any mention of innovative healthcare or educational delivery modalities may reveal non-traditional opportunities where your proposal can stand out as unique. In most cases, “thinking outside of the box” will excite grant reviewers.

Foundations may assist in providing seed or expansion money for Telehealth programs.  Search Google or your regional newspaper for local philanthropists and foundations that may benefit from a compassionate request.  These funders require special care, so be aware the human element greatly impacts your capacity to secure funding.

Contracts are essential in funding Telehealth programs.  Ask yourself what agency stands    to benefit most, and then open a dialogue about a potential contract partnership.
