Responding to concerns about bias, fairness, and equity in the use of AI applications in healthcare, the Coalition for Health AI in collaboration with Duke AI Health, Mayo Clinic, The MITRE Corporation, and Partnership on AI, and with support from The Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, convened a group of subject matter experts to work together across healthcare and other industries.

With this overarching goal in mind, the objective of this Virtual Session was to develop our
collective understanding of the definitions, important considerations, and open questions for the
concepts of equity, bias, and fairness in health. This Virtual Session included a series of three
lightning talk presentations and group discussions centered on preselected use cases, and a set of
breakout sessions that addressed the following themes: Health Equity by Design; Bias and Fairness
Processes and Metrics; and Impacting Marginalized Groups: Mitigation Strategies for Data,
Model, and Application Bias.

The Objective of the Crystal Ball Project is to examine digital healthcare technologies and applications that will have the most impact in the next three to five years and provide credible vision and examples of near-term advancements in Health related technology. Deliverables of the project include providing tools to assist in the assessment of such technology to streamline decisions and results.

The technologies discussed will solve urgent needs at a critical time for healthcare by bringing remote diagnostic abilities, automation, and scalability to a market struggling with supply and demand challenges; including, but not limited to:

a growing patient population which is living longer, but with more chronic
comorbidities

escalating provider shortages

an increasingly complex and sub-specialized healthcare

ballooning costs

healthcare access and equity issues

The Crystal Ball team identified six major topic areas:

Artificial Intelligence including machine learning and natural language processing

Expanded applications and use of telehealth/telemedicine

Solution platforms: APPs, electronic health record (EHR) integration/data
management, bioWare/bioSensors

Virtual and augmented reality

Drones

Robotics

Hearables

Authored and offered by a collaboration with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) and the National Telehealth Technology Assessment Center (TTAC)
