I will be your guide along the Grime Scene in this episode of GSI: The Rock.
Today, we are going to look at the things you need to know when it comes to hygiene.
Wait, what is going on? You have got to be kidding me. Not happening.
Much better. Let's get started.
To get this investigation going, we're going to need to ask you some questions...
Who is capable of sneezing, coughing, eating, breathing, or having dirty hands? Anyone.
What are we going to learn today? Hand Hygiene.
Where should hand hygiene be practiced? At UAMS, and EVERYWHERE.
When should hand hygiene be practiced? At all times.
Why should we practice good hand hygiene? Because it is the #1 way of preventing infection.
We need to round up the usual suspects to see what we are working with. If we look at their habits, we can determine the main offender. First, we will concentrate on your hands.
Click on each of the culprits to see their name and what they do.
Now that we have met the criminals, it is up to us to become a true grime-fighting team. Who needs to wash their hands? Let's see...
The Medical Staff which includes nurses, doctors, and other personnel.
People that may visit patients in the hospital
and
YOU!
Infection prevention begins with you.
When should you wash your hands?
When entering and leaving a patient's room.
Before and after touching the patient.
Before and after touching objects in the patient's room.
Before and after you eat.
After using the restroom.
After sneezing, blowing your nose, or coughing.
After any activity that will make your hands dirty.
Within this file are the names and images of our most feared criminals. Look over them closely, and investigate their crimes. They may look innocent at first glance, but not everything is as it seems. Click on the folder to open the file. Select each of the photos to see what lies beneath. You must investigate each area of the room before moving on.
Click the police tape to watch a short video on proper handwashing.
You should wash your hands for 30 seconds each time. I know, I know...no problem. Well, are you sure you know how long 30 seconds truly is?
Click the button to get a better idea. This is also about the amount of time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" to someone.
Handwashing is extremely important in the hospital setting.
As we have discussed, it removes dirt and germs. There are numerous germs in the hospital from all of the patients, visitors, and staff. Washing your hands gets rid of these germs. This elimination of germs helps prevent the spread of disease because hands are the most common way that germs are passed from one person to another.
Excellent! Wait...what...hold on!
Now, let's take a look at the patient's room to see where the suspects might have been. Find each of the pieces of evidence in the room. Each germ has left something behind; it is our job to find these things. Move your cursor over the germs to see what is there, then click on it to add it to the file. There are 10 germs in the room.
Click the magnifying glass to begin the investigation.
There is some evidence that has been gathered from the scene. Often times, we really can't see what is there unless we look at it in a different light - in this case, black light. Click the folder to see what we may not have been able to see before.
Pretty enlightening, huh?
There will be times when a sink and soap is nowhere to be found. At this point, what do you do?
These folders contain different options you may consider when faced with not having soap and water readily available. Click through the tabs to see what the best method is under these conditions.
Benefits of hand sanitizer are that it does not take as long as soap and water will. It does get rid of more of the germs on your hands than soap and water. It is less drying on your skin, and it is usually available everywhere.
While sanitizer sounds fantastic, your first choice should be soap and water.
Now that your hands are clean, you need to look out for the patient even further. Never be afraid to ask someone if they have washed their hands. If they have not, ask them to do so. Remember, we must all realize we are fighting for the same cause.
Congratulations! You have solved the case. We now know that germs are the criminals and the only way to bring them to justice is to practice proper hand hygiene. Click 'Exit' to leave the scene of the crime.
