Tele-Stroke

Program Name: UAMS AR SAVES
Clinic/Hospital Affiliation: UAMS Center for Distance Health
Program Description: AR SAVES (Stroke Assistance through Virtual Emergency Support) connects rural hospitals with high-speed video communication links to stroke neurologists at UAMS. Many of Arkansas’ rural hospitals, without the support of a neurologist, often forgo administration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), or they lack the staff resources to accurately identify and manage tPA candidates. Further, the window of time needed to affectively administer tPA is often lost when stroke patients are transported to a better-equipped, remote hospital.
What can the program do for sites? Provide comprehensive stroke care and training via telemedicine.
•  After acceptance into the program, several sessions will occur to educate the staff on the NIH scale, proper telemedicine equipment techniques, protocol training, mock exams, etc. •  At the time of a stroke event, AR SAVES joins the Emergency Room Physician and the remotely-located Specialist (Neurologist) via telemedicine. The experienced nursing staff is available around-the-clock and coordinates the telemedicine exam connecting the ER doctor, staff and patient with the Specialist. This facilitation includes patient prep, examination, treatment and coordinating transport, when needed.
Accepting new members? New sites can request to be placed on a waiting list. Or, they can request to become a “branch” site to an existing AR SAVES facility.
