Colposcopy Clinic

Program Name: ANGELS START (System to Access Rural Tele-Colposcopy)
Clinic/Hospital Affiliation: UAMS ANGELS / Arkansas Department of Health
Program Description: The Center for Distance Health Colposcopy program for patients of the Arkansas Department of Health consists of regional referral centers at local county health units for women who present with abnormal pap smears.
What can the program do for sites? This telemedicine program provides guidance in colposcopic evaluations and to identify women with high-grade lesions requiring treatment while providing conservative follow-up of low-grade lesions for a safe and cost-effective means of managing abnormal pap smears in Arkansas. Nurse practitioners perform the exams at the local site under the supervision of a UAMS OB/GYN faculty member via telemedicine. The UAMS OB/GYN faculty member consults and advises on where the biopsy should be taken while viewing over video. After the biopsy is collected, it is sent to UAMS pathology. Patients with high-grade lesions usually qualify for a Medicaid program for treatment. They can receive treatment locally or at UAMS.
Accepting new members? This program is currently designated for Health Department sites. (However, UAMS ANGELS would consider creating a similar tele-colposcopy program for other sites if funding is available.)
